Friends,

This is ‘about’ how low I used to fly the F-104 over a  dry lake bed a little south of the Grand Canyon for German student’s 1st Solo in chase position (slightly higher of course!).  That was after taking each one down into the Grand Canyon for a tour.  It was legal in those days of the early ‘80’s, and was just like the scene in “Independence Day” with Will Smith in the F18.     Great Fun at 550mph!  Perfectly safe too since with that speed you could zoom up and out with no problem.

Use Google Earth, and go to the Grand Canyon.  Tilt it to get a good “level” view then “fly” down the canyons using your mouse & steering arrows.

I got these from a fellow F-104 lover, Hubert Peitzmeier, http://www.916-starfighter.de/

Hello Ike,

It is always interesting to notice that all the photos taken from low-flying 104s are always Dutch Air Force zips.......except the famous photo of the German Navy 104 ditching the water of the Northsea during one of its missions...

Have fun,    Harry {Prins}

Yep!   But the “Brit” reputation for low flying is legendary.  I’ve had my flight path crossed more than once on “low levels”, by flights of Jaguars or Tornados …  under me with barely a shadow visible!     While us Yanks would get our wings ripped off if we were caught (but of course we all have some ‘private’ stories).  I just think the ‘Brass’ forgot that you have to have aggressive Fighter Pilots, or lose the edge!
